WHEN ARTHRITIS ISN’T JUST ARTHRITIS:  Holistic Approach of Posture Alignment and Awareness

We hear the word arthritis a lot. For many people, it feels like a vague diagnosis,  a catchall for pain when doctors aren’t sure what else to call it. But arthritis is more than just a word. It’s real, it’s painful, and it leaves people wondering: What’s causing my pain, and what can I do about it?

What Is Arthritis?

At its root, arthritis simply means inflammation of the joints. There are many types, from osteoarthritis (“wear and tear”) to rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune) to gout (uric acid buildup). But the common thread is inflammation and imbalance in the body.

The bigger question is not what it’s called, but why it’s happening.

  • Is the pain fueled by years of postural misalignment, where joints are overloaded and cartilage wears unevenly?
  • Possibly an immune system response aggravated by processed foods or hidden food sensitivities?
  • Could chemicals in our environment  such as pesticides, cleaning agents, or plastics be burdening our system and sparking inflammation?

Like a puzzle, we often see just one piece at a time. But when we step back, we notice how each piece connects: posture, food, environment, and even stress.

Posture Alignment: A Missing Piece

Maria, a woman in her early 50s, came to our clinic with persistent knee pain diagnosed as “wear-and-tear” osteoarthritis. Hours at a desk had left her leaning to one side, her core and glutes weak, and her joints carrying more load than they were designed for. Over time, small imbalances became chronic pain.

Through gentle, one-on-one coaching, Maria began to retrain her muscles and restore balance. She learned how her posture shaped the way she moved and how tiny adjustments such as standing taller, engaging muscles that stopped working and allowing overcompensating muscles to relax could reduce strain and make movement feel easier.

When your posture is out of alignment, your joints carry stress they were never designed to handle. Knees take the load for hips, shoulders compensate for the spine, and over time inflammation builds. Realigning the body restores balance so joints can function the way they were intended.

Through one-on-one posture coaching, we guide clients to:

  • Retrain muscles to support healthy joint alignment
  • Improve circulation so tissues can repair
  • Reduce “hot spots” of wear and tear that often masquerade as arthritis pain

Food, Supplements, and Chemicals

Inflammation isn’t only about posture. What we put into our bodies matters.

Food as medicine: Whole, unprocessed foods calm inflammation. Processed sugars, refined oils, and excessive dairy often make it worse. I even had a client once that mentioned that decaf coffee was found to explain her arthritis type symptoms. When she stopped the decaf coffee her joint aches resolved themselves.

Supplements that support (without overloading): Omega-3s, vitamin D, magnesium, and collagen, and this interesting article on Borax can support joint health and healing when used wisely. But supplements should never replace the basics of movement and nutrition.

Reducing chemical load: From plastics to cleaning sprays, our bodies are constantly exposed to toxins that increase inflammation. Small changes such as choosing natural products, clean water, and spending more time outdoors, help lighten that load. Even hidden or unexpected influences matter.

A Whole Body, Holistic View

We believe the body is resilient. You are not broken. You are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” When we give the body what it needs, proper alignment, nourishing food, clean air and water, and intentional movement, it often responds in powerful ways.

"Have you ever wondered why you still feel tired after a full night’s sleep? The answer may not be in your mattress, but ....
Balance is something most of us don’t think about until it begins to slip away.
We’ve all heard the saying, “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” It’s a phrase that holds wisdom for both life and the human body. Too often, people rush into strengthening exercises, lifting heavier weights, pushing harder in workouts, or pounding out miles on the pavement, without asking a critical question: Is my foundation straight?
The Strength of Curiosity The year was 1984, shortly after I had our second child, I noticed a small lump in my neck. At first, I barely thought about it, but my husband grew concerned and asked a friend—who happened to be a doctor—what he thought. After feeling it, he told my husband, “I think you should get this checked out—and the sooner, the better.” We were part of a large HMO (Health Maintenance Organization), so getting an appointment took time. When I finally saw the doctor, I seemed like a healthy, young woman. They ran the usual tests, and over the course of 9 months,  the lump was diagnosed as a simple goiter. But something didn’t sit right. The lump seemed to grow and harden, and I knew my body was sending me signals I couldn’t ignore.
