FINDING BALANCE: WHY POSTURE MATTERS AT EVERY AGE

Balance is something most of us don’t think about until it begins to slip away.

Real Stories and Simple Solutions

Story One: “Use Your Brakes”

How posture resets balance in an instant

A few years ago, I was traveling with my aunt. She was always polished, with weekly hair appointments, manicured nails, and everything perfectly in place. But beneath that well-kept appearance, her health was struggling. One thing stood out, her posture.

When she walked, she leaned forward and shuffled, her feet racing to keep up as if she were almost running. Friends encouraged her to use a walker, and she eventually agreed, but even then, her feet still scrambled to catch up with her body.

During that trip, I asked her to try something simple: pull your shoulder blades together. Instantly, her posture improved. Her shoulders shifted back over her hips, her feet slowed, and her balance returned. I called it “using her brakes.”

For the rest of our trip, whenever she began rushing forward, I would gently remind her: “Use your brakes.” We laughed every time, making little jokes about brake checks, and it became a fun reminder that small adjustments can have a big impact.

Story Two: The Active Mom

Why habits and awareness matter as much as strength

Balance challenges are not just about age, they are about habits. My mom was a very active woman, independent and determined to do things on her own. One day, while hurrying around the house, she was not paying close attention and got her feet tangled up in the vacuum cord. That tumble led to her first hip fracture. Thankfully, many vacuums today are cordless, which helps eliminate one of those hidden household hazards.

After her injury, she moved less and spent more time quilting and doing applique, creative hobbies she loved but ones that kept her sitting more and moving less. When she came to visit me, I gave her exercises, and she would walk around our neighborhood, feeling stronger and more stable. But when she returned home to California, old habits crept back.

We all need family and friends to encourage movement and simple exercises that help maintain balance. Unfortunately, my mom eventually had another fall, this time in her own yard filled with rocks and gravel in cozy Wrightwood, California, where she had worked for 20 years. It was a sobering reminder that even active, independent people need support, awareness, and consistency to prevent falls.

Why Posture and Balance Go Hand in Hand

The science behind falls and how alignment makes the difference

Both of these stories highlight a simple truth: posture and movement habits are directly tied to balance. When the shoulders pitch forward, the body leans, forcing the feet to play catch-up. This creates instability and raises the risk of falls, the leading cause of injury among older adults.

When posture improves, balance follows. A review published in The National Library of Medicine  Age-Related Dysfunctions in Balance emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to managing balance disorders. This includes reviewing medications, addressing health conditions, and modifying environments. The paper also calls for future research to deepen our understanding of the complex mechanisms that affect balance as we age and highlights the potential of new technologies and interdisciplinary methods to enhance assessment and intervention.

Posture and alignment exercises significantly reduce fall risk and help maintain mobility and independence.

Movement Is Medicine

Why sitting is the new smoking and how to keep moving for life

We have all heard the saying: “Sitting is the new smoking.” Extended periods of sitting weaken muscles, stiffen joints, and reduce flexibility. Over time, this accelerates the loss of balance and mobility. .

The good news is that the body is designed to adapt and heal when we give it the right kind of movement.

I love sharing this video of a  90-year-old woman doing the splits It is an inspiring reminder that age does not have to define your limits. Flexibility, balance, and strength can be maintained, and even improved, when we move consistently and mindfully.

Balance is something most of us don’t think about until it begins to slip away.
We’ve all heard the saying, “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” It’s a phrase that holds wisdom for both life and the human body. Too often, people rush into strengthening exercises, lifting heavier weights, pushing harder in workouts, or pounding out miles on the pavement, without asking a critical question: Is my foundation straight?
The Strength of Curiosity The year was 1984, shortly after I had our second child, I noticed a small lump in my neck. At first, I barely thought about it, but my husband grew concerned and asked a friend—who happened to be a doctor—what he thought. After feeling it, he told my husband, “I think you should get this checked out—and the sooner, the better.” We were part of a large HMO (Health Maintenance Organization), so getting an appointment took time. When I finally saw the doctor, I seemed like a healthy, young woman. They ran the usual tests, and over the course of 9 months,  the lump was diagnosed as a simple goiter. But something didn’t sit right. The lump seemed to grow and harden, and I knew my body was sending me signals I couldn’t ignore.

"The site of your pain is rarely the source of your problem.” Pain is your body’s way of getting your attention—a signal, not a diagnosis. Like a warning light on your dashboard, pain tells you something is off, but it doesn’t always tell you where or why. Our job is to trace the problem to its root—and that often means looking far from where the discomfort shows up.
